While this data is hilarious, I doubt that Facebook is a proper dataset with which to use. Intelligent readers tend to spend their time actually reading, rather than adding books to their favorites list on social media. They would rather actually be reading Joyce, Woolf, O'Brien, Proust, Dostoevsky, etc. Then again, here I am on this silly but amusing site, not reading a good book...

Weird list. I read The Color Purple in 2014 and was surprised at how good and challenging it was, so I'm surprised to see it listed as a dumb book. I did not expect to like it but having done so I regard it as a great work of literature. Anything by Ayn Rand should be on the dumb end. Rand is what dumb people think is a smart book.

I am amused by one pair on this list. My freshman year of high school, I was assigned Fahrenheit 451 in English class. It was, in my opinion, incredibly boring and ridiculous. That same year, I convinced my English teacher to let me read Lolita for my classic novel project. That is an awesome book. (I do, however, question its classification as "erotica.") Ladies and gentleman... numbers 96 and 1.

I read Atlas Shrugged back in the 1960s (at age 16). The novel (a well-written tome) came about during the Cold War...and Ayn Rand, having grown up in Soviet Russia (under its brand of communism), wrote novels that were strong reactions (negative) to what she saw. Her books were not 'poorlywritten bits of pro-exploitation'...they revealed a philospohy of Objectivism. I am not a Randist...but I appreciate and respect her ideas and her books greatly. Ben, have you read Atlas Shrugged? Am presuming you haven't.
